MIME Types for M4V files with GoDaddy for Video Podcasting

If you have been trying to get a video podcast going with Godaddy's hosting and have been getting problems with your Apple M4V files coming back as TEXT files in Feedburner account look no further. For a while Podcatchers are treating my content as text/plain and I was getting frustrated and throwing objects around my office.. Hopefully if your reading this you won't have to go through the same experience.

I decided to go with GoDaddy because their rates are really good, they have large bandwidth and storage for people that want to work with the High demand of video podcasting.. But... I had some initial problems configuring my GoDaddy account to work with Apples "M4V" filetype. I read about the .HTACCESS file on the net. GoDaddy apparently supports this way of adding MIME types. So I added these lines to my .HTACCESS file. An HTACCESS file is just a plain text file you can create with notepad or any text editor. I put one in my root/index and one in the directory that contains the M4V files.

AddType video/x-m4v m4v
AddType audio/x-m4a m4a
AddType video/mp4 mp4

I used CHMOD in my FTP client to change the file permissions to 644.. It Does take some time for this to go through the system, only a few days though? After that Podmedic in Feedburner should come back as aMedia file.. Your away publishing your feed to iTunes.. Podcast away!

Lazy Sunday: The Chronicles of Narnia Video

According to Ars Technica: NBC orders removal of video from download site - Our story begins with the December 17th airing of Saturday Night Live. During that episode, a pretty funny rap video entitled Lazy Sunday: The Chronicles of Narnia was aired. The clip, starring Chris Parnell and Andy Samberg as a couple of incredibly lame rappers walking through New York doing incredibly lame things, was uploaded to video download site YouTube.com, where it became something of an instant hit. Although we don’t have statistics on the number of downloads, the video made enough of an impact to be featured in a New York Times story on SNL, and has been credited with turning a new generation of viewers on to the show. Enter the lawyers. This week, NBC’s lawyers sent a letter to YouTube, requesting removal of the video from its servers. The site complied with the request, and placed a short note on its blog explaining the removal and stating that “YouTube respects the rights of copyright holders.” The video was also belatedly made available for free on the NBC web site, along with being offered as a US$1.99 download from the iTunes Music Store. As a side note, videos streamed from the NBC web site only work on Windows machines.
You can also watch it on NBC’s Screening Room, but it seems to have problems in Firefox. Only seems to work in IE.

If you haven't seen Saturday Night Live's Chronicles of Narnia rap, then you don't have any friends. Or at least any friends with Internet access. The two-minute video, which debuted on SNL last Saturday before resurfacing as a much-forwarded "digital short," has accomplished what seemed impossible a week ago—making Saturday Night Live a cultural touchstone for the first time since Christopher Walken pleaded for "more cowbell." The popularity of the Narnia rap might augur a reawakening at SNL—in fact, there are already T-shirts that parrot the song's catchphrases. It's more significant, though, for what it says about the state of rap.
The video, officially titled "Lazy Sunday," depicts a day in the life of a pair of dorky New Yorkers. Andy Samberg (aka Samberg) calls up Chris Parnell (aka Parns) "just to see how he's doin'." Soon enough, they "mack on some cupcakes" from the West Village's Magnolia Bakery and debate which online map service will reveal the "dopest route" to an Upper West Side screening of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Then the chorus kicks in: "We love that Chronic—what?—cles of Narnia / Pass that Chronic—what?—cles of Narnia."

Download the video here (direct download). The rap’s really funny and the tune is actually catchy.

Broaden your Online Video Content Syndication

A VC Has written an excellent article on Online Video Content Syndication check out the full article here

There is a story on the front page of the Marketplace section of the Wall Street Journal today titled As TV Networks Use Web, Affiliates Seek Piece of the Action written by Brooks Barnes.

It’s an interesting piece because it talks about the emerging conflicts between the networks and their affiliates over the digital distribution of television content. The example that Brooks gives is CBS’ decision to sell some of its shows via iTunes which charges $1.99 per show for download and the reaction of one of CBS’ largest affiliates, Capitol Broadcasting, which wants to offer the same shows on the website of its Raleigh, NC station WRAL.

Here’s the bottom line. In the digital medium, the content should be syndicated as broadly as possible. If iTunes wants to charge $1.99 for the shows, let them. If WRAL wants to stream the shows with ads (and download them for a small fee), let them.

CBS should do the same on its website. I think they should offer RSS feeds of every show in their lineup. The service should be either subscription driven or ad supported or ideally offer both options.

This is the digital medium we are talking about. Bits are bits. They are going to get widely distributed anyway. That’s how this medium works. If CBS understands that, they’ll forget about exclusivity, which doesn’t work online anyway, and make their content ubiquitious, monetize it with whatever business models their distribution partners want to use, take a cut of the action, and they should do the same themselves on their websites and then sit back and watch the digital medium work its magic.

If you don’t get this, do yourself a favor and go do a search on SNL on google video, youtube, myspace video, or anywhere else that video content is aggregated on the web. You’ll find a bunch of Saturday Night Live skits that have been uploaded by internet users who wanted to share them with their friends. I did the same with the Steve Jobs SNL skit on this blog last year.

NBC needs to make SNL available on the web wherever people want to get it. And they need to microchunk the shows down to the skit level. And monetize it with ads or subscriptions or both. Because if they don’t others will and are already doing it.

As for the debate about subscription versus ad supported business models, I think the data is coming in pretty conclusively that the free model is where the big money will be made. I posted the results of a survey several weeks ago on this topic that said 68% of the population prefer free and ad supported. Yesterday, the results of another survey were published, this time by the Points North Group and Horowitz Associates. This time 62% prefer free versus 17% who want paid with no ads. 21% are undecided which means they haven’t been asked to pay yet and hit the back button. Either way, the digital medium has worked best with a free ad-supported model (see Google’s earnings last night $2bn in revenue in Q4 and cash flow of almost $500 million all from ads on free web content).

So back to WRAL and CBS. WRAL has the right idea. They are in the television content distribution business. It’s moving to the web. They want to continue to be the one to deliver it to their audience. CBS should let them do just that and get paid fairly for their content in the process.

Myspace Marketing

Think online communities are for freaks and geeks? Guess again, because odds are your friends, neighbors, and co-workers already have a profile on myspace.com. In case you’re not one of the ten-million-plus people currently surfing around on the http://www.myspace.com/ network, here’s a quick breakdown of this new pop-culture craze.

In the simplest of terms myspace.com is a vast online social club in which members can create and update personalized web profiles of themselves complete with pictures, text, music, and graphics. Users can then establish a network of friends in which they can interactively communicate with via private messages, public comments, pictures, and mass-mail bulletins. To most, myspace.com is a way to stay in touch with friends, meet new people, and to score dates, but to a growing number of skateboard, snowboard, and youth oriented brands and retail shops it represents a largely untapped arena for guerilla marketing.

Best Blog Directory And RSS Submission Sites

*As more and more people get involved with the Internet and as more Web sites, blogs, news services and other online resources continue to grow in number and variety it becomes increasingly important to maintain high visibility and exposure for the content being generated by closely following the major distribution media.

Until now the web was populated by Web sites and other HTML-based content pages, and the main vehicle for reaching content has been the large use of major search engines and directories.
As a rapidly increasing number of content sources, new and old, migrate or add RSS as a key distribution channel, and as more people utilize RSS newsreaders and aggregators to keep themselves informed, the ability to maintain high exposure and visibility is gradually shifted from a complete attention to major search engines and content optimization techniques to an increasing awareness of RSS feed directories and search tools.

If until now the world of content optimization online went under the umbrella of SEO (search engine optimization) and SEM (search engine marketing) from now it exist, at least in principle the opportunity to grow another complementary field tentatively called RSSEM (RSS search engine marketing).

One of the key benefits of this reference list is that it provides all of the submission links directly, so that you don't have to waste any time at all to find these at each destination site. This by itself is a significant effort, especially as a number of sites make it consciously hard to find this info, in order to discourage spam and superficial or automated submissions. In some cases I have been able to dig out valuable emails and contact forms after a lot of searching.
I have not included regional or geographically limited directories or search engines, and have dropped any service that did not look reliable or trustable.

By adding up a good set of new and important resources I have been able to more than double up on Ari's initial list of submission sites while extending the coverage to important global news syndicators. The list is also unique as it offers only english-based global directories and no specialized or niche resources.

Other lists available online and which I have credited are either too superficial and not up-to-date (including many sites that either do not work or are not reliable) or listing many search services and tools which do not rely on manual submission to become aware of new blogs/sites/RSS feeds.

I think that this is a VERY powerful list to use to increase your RSS feed/blog exposure and visibility online. If you organize yourself well, with an Excel spreadsheet and the time to track your process through it, you can do the whole effort in less than a day and you can start to see the results the day after.

Where to submit your RSS feeds and Weblogs

1) Yahoo!
http://www.yahoo.com/

Yahoo! has a search engine, directory and news resource in which you can add your blog, feed and Web site. Few can argue against Yahoo! Search being one of the top major search engines and directories available online, so you want to make sure your stuff is listed on Yahoo! wherever possible. Yahoo! lists plenty of blogs within the appropriate categories for the blogs and you can add yours to the list (see below).
Yahoo is a massive and it gets confusing. Its help page explains the Directory and how it differs from the other parts of the site. Search Help is also a good resource for understanding the Yahoo! Network.

Yahoo! Directory organizes Web sites and pages into categories and subcategories. Sometimes visitors don't know what they want and prefer to look through the directory instead of entering keywords. Or they want to find keywords within a specific category.
Yahoo! News is also a major source for news information online. It's possible to directly submit your news-based Web site, blog or RSS news feed to Yahoo News through an official submission form. Yahoo News requires submission of your name, email, URL, the selection of the item "Suggest news site for news search index" in the drop down menu labeled "What are you writing about" and any extra comments you may have.

Your site is immediately submitted to the Yahoo News editorial review team and checked for approval. If your site produces original news content on a daily basis you may want to seriously consider submitting your site to this resource as it may provide for major increase in reach and exposure once your content is regularly spidered by the Yahoo News content crawler.
To submit your site: When you go to the submission page, it'll have you do a search of your site's URL to ensure it's not already listed. Once done, you'll have to login with your Yahoo! ID. The best thing to do is search for the category in the directory where your entry belongs and then click Suggest a Site. FAQ on how to suggest a site.

Five Online Marketing Strategies

1.
Deploy opt-in e-mail campaigns very selectively (!) - buy opt-in e-mail lists from legitimate top-tier broker/list managers who are well established, are not “over-sending” messages to list subscribers and who are constantly refreshing their list quality by adding new subscribers. Critical questions to ask brokers include: how many messages (“frequency” in ad speak) are sent to each list recipient per month, how are new subscribers added and what is the percentage of new members added per month, are they using “third party” (someone else’s list) lists to augment their own, are their lists “double opt in” (meaning, you sign up and then must reply to a signup confirmation to be added to a list) and last but not least, what is their privacy policy and how strictly do they adhere to published industry standards.

2.
Utilize plain vanilla text link advertising – find web sites or portals that have traffic that is comprised of customers who are in your market segment. Then, add a text link (banner ad or graphic button if you will) to a page or pages and negotiate a media buy that is based upon a “cost per click” basis; i.e. paying only for traffic that clicks through to your web site.

3.
Creating and deploying a “link strategy” campaign (i.e. getting a site listed via other web sites) is one of the best self-sustaining interactive marketing processes available to any company seeking to drive qualified traffic to a web site. This process is not based upon the more traditional “reciprocal links” procedure but incorporates some web-based competitive analysis. You start by analyzing the links that are pointing back to your top 3-5 competitors’ web sites and then establish relationships with these sites and also submit your site to top and second tier directories to augment the number of links.

4.
Newsletter insert advertising used to be considered rather mundane and not very effective. But, if you contrast the effectiveness of this process versus the new opt-in e-mail response rates the heretofore-lowly newsletter advertising has new and vastly improved luster! Also, in the past it was difficult to track when and if people clicked on a text link ad in a newsletter - but new technology enables virtually any publisher to provide you with this information, enabling you to track your ROI for the media buy. Finally, the real beauty of newsletter text advertising is that it is very targeted and people want to receive the information so you can be confident your ad will at least be viewed by some finite number of prospects.

5.
Search Engine Ranking has come of age in the last 12-24 months – you can now easily create and deploy a traditional (title, description, keywords inserts in content, submissions and optimization) search engine ranking process that is augmented with a pay per click (“PPC”) process. Deploying both ensures you derive long term (traditional rankings) and short term (pay per click) results, with the latter being driven by the amount of funds you have in your marketing budget.
